SULFADIOL®-7Q

(GS-7Q)

GS-7Q is an anionic, reactive emulsifier. Unlike conventional anionic emulsifiers, it can provide formulation stability without adding a neutralizing agent (counter-ion), which is typically required for stabilization. GS-7Q is manufactured through a strong acid and strong base reaction, giving it superior hydrolysis resistance compared to conventional anionic emulsifiers. By adding at least 1.7 units of propylene oxide to both sides of sulfonated 1,4-butanediol, GS-7Q provides suitable flowability at the polyurethane synthesis temperature. GS-7Q is a highly hydrophilic material. It is an emulsifier designed to impart hydrophilicity to polyurethane, enabling stable dispersion even in water.

It can be applied across many industries that use water-dispersed polyurethane. For example, it can be used in the development and manufacture of footwear adhesive resins in the footwear industry, furniture adhesive resins in the furniture industry, and resins for the surface layer, adhesive layer, and impregnation applications in the synthetic leather industry.

  Key Features and Applications

TDI & MDI Reaction

A direct reaction between GS-7Q and TDI/MDI is difficult to keep stable. As such, a stepwise approach is recommended over a direct one.

Other Isocyanate Reactions

GS-7Q has lower compatibility than other emulsifiers. In particular, it has especially poor compatibility with ester polyols with a molecular weight (M.W.) of 1,500 g/mol or higher and ether polyols with a molecular weight (M.W.) of 500 g/mol or higher. To address compatibility issues, the following approaches are recommended:

  • Add an organic solvent at the start of the initial reaction to improve compatibility.
  • Use a stepwise reaction to maximize reactivity.
  • Adjust the timing of catalyst addition to prevent localized reactions.
  • Extend the reaction time to ensure complete reaction.

  Storage and Before use

Because GS-7Q has very strong hydrophilicity, make sure it is tightly sealed after use to prevent moisture and humidity from entering.

(Before Use)

  • Before use, heat until fully melted to ensure flowability.
  • After use, tightly close the lid of the container.
  • For handling precautions, refer to the MSDS.
